Melatonin
-controls the body's biological clock
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain and is considered a central regulatory hormone in the body. When it is dark, more melatonin is released by the pineal gland. However, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, medication, prolonged stress, or night shifts can lower natural melatonin levels. Taking melatonin has the potential to correct sleep disorders.
Melatonin regulates the sleep-wake rhythm; it is our internal clock that tells us when to sleep and when to be awake. Melatonin allows for faster falling asleep, improved sleep patterns, fewer wake-up phases, and greater fitness in the morning. Melatonin enhances the effectiveness of antioxidants to protect DNA. To support regeneration, melatonin is taken in the evening before bedtime. This gives the body time to repair its systems during the night.
